Grants FAQs

Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions about our grant programmes.

What do you fund?

To be eligible for funding, your project must focus on Glasgow’s historic built environment and meet at least one of the following six Grant Priorities of the Programme.

Funded projects have included building repairs, exhibitions, traditional skills training, events, publications, research projects, and community workshops.

For more information on what we can fund and eligibility please read our Guidance Notes and list of Grant Eligible building repairs.

What can't you fund?

  • We won’t fund repairs to an individual private home. It is unlikely that a single householder will be able to deliver the social, environmental and economic outcomes that we require from grant funded projects.
  • We can’t fund repairs to the interior of a property.
  • We can’t fund works that are not conservation repairs, i.e. repairs to modern features.
  • We won’t fund the cost of repair, overhaul or reinstatement of traditional sash windows unless it is part of a larger comprehensive repair scheme. Find out more about eligible building repairs.
  • We can’t fund work that has already been carried out.
  • We can’t provide 100% of the costs of a project.
  • We can’t fund repairs to active Places of Worship – visit the Heritage Lottery Fund website to find out more about their grants for Places of Worship.
  • Local authorities and public bodies are not eligible for Building Repair Grants.
  • We can only fund repairs to buildings which are Category A-Listed, Category B-Listed, Category C-Listed or in a Conservation Area – if you aren’t sure you can check your buildings status here.
  • We can’t fund the costs of existing staff, premises and other running expenditure where it relates to the project.
  • We won’t fund catering/ refreshment costs, if that is the only thing for which grant funding is being requested. Catering/ refreshment costs requested as part of a wider programme will be considered at the Committee’s discretion.

How will projects be assessed?

We have a two stage process for applying for grant funding:

Enquiry

Before proceeding to submit an application, you will first need to have submitted an Enquiry via our online enquiry form. Eligible grant enquiries will be reviewed by the Grants Team. We will get back to you with some feedback and guidance on submitting a full application to us, usually within 21 days.

Application

You can submit an application at any time, but decisions are made at Grants Committee meetings every 3 months so it’s worth paying attention to the next deadline. We will consider requests for decisions to be fast-tracked in exceptional cases, such as emergency repairs to prevent loss of significant historic fabric.

Once we have all the information we need, your grant application will then be scored against our Grant Priorities and this will be used by the Grants Committee when considering your application. All applications will be assessed through a competitive process. All decisions are made by our Grants Committee, made up of GCHT Trustees, at their quarterly meetings. Please note the Trust will use its discretion in the final assessment of your application.

Following the Grants Committee meeting you will be notified of the Committee’s decision in writing.

What information will I need to complete the enquiry form?

We will ask if you are proposing a building repair project, or a community engagement, skills or education project.

For building repair projects you will need:

  • The full address of the property you want to repair
  • Whether the building is listed or in a conservation area, check here.
  • Whether the building is currently in use
  • Whether you have funding, or have applied for funding from other sources
  • A brief outline of the work you hope to do – read our Guidance notes for a list of eligible repairs.
  • Your contact details (you only need to provide this information if you want to submit an official enquiry to us)

For a community engagement, skills or education project you will need:

  • A brief outline of the project
  • What the need for the project is and if you have any evidence of this need
  • How much the project will cost in total (a rough idea at this stage is fine)
  • How much you want to apply to us for (again, just a guide would be great)
  • Whether you are working with any partners
  • Any other funding or in-kind contributions you’ve got or applied for.
  • Your contact details (you only need to provide this information if you want to go ahead and submit an enquiry to us)

Can I speak to someone over the phone to see whether we are eligible for funding?

For a conversation to be meaningful we first need to know a little bit about what you’re proposing to do. We recommend you complete our enquiry form to find out if you should apply for funding from the Trust.

If you are having problems with the form, please contact us on 0141 552 1331.

My property is a listed building - does that mean I'm eligible for a grant for repair work?

The property needs to be listed (or in a conservation area) to be eligible for a Building Repair Grant, but we also need any grant-funded project to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits for Glasgow. Read our Guidance Notes for more information about what we’re looking for.
You can check if your building is listed or in a conservation area here.

Your online form said I'm not eligible for a grant - why not?

If we’ve said that we don’t think you’re eligible for a grant, there might be a variety of reasons why. For example:
  • It is unlikely that a single householder will be able to deliver the social, environmental and economic outcomes that we require from grant funded building repair projects and it is likely that investment will instead be focussed on larger comprehensive repair schemes involving a whole tenement or multiple owners in a building.
  • We can’t fund projects that have already started.
  • We require all grant funded projects to deliver outcomes for communities and for Glasgow’s heritage – read our Guidance Notes for more information about what we’re looking for.

You've told me I need to find some match funding for my project, any ideas?

A new online funding toolkit has been launched as the legacy of the four-year Resourcing Scotland’s Heritage partnership programme, led by Arts & Business Scotland with Archaeology Scotland, Built Environment Forum Scotland, greenspace scotland and Museums Galleries Scotland.

Inspiring Fundraising aims to help everyone in the heritage sector in Scotland raise funds for their organisation, cause or project, effectively and with greater confidence.
